Women must be beautiful, women must be hidden

Series of 21 mixed media of Photograph and painting, Black and withe, square shape, different formats, 2017

This series of photographs is derived from a video performance bearing the same title. The captured moments of my suffering serve as an introduction and symbolize the plight of women under the oppressive amalgamation of totalitarian and sexist laws, intertwined with religious mandates in Iran. Despite Iranian women comprising the majority of university students, they face unequal treatment compared to men, particularly regarding employment, divorce, travel, and inheritance. These disparities are exemplified by the obligatory hijab, which serves as a symbol of these gender-based restrictions.
