Women Must Be Beautiful, Women Must Be Hidden explores the ways in which the female body becomes, in Iran, a site of prescription, surveillance, and contradiction. Through a sequence of images in which presence and erasure respond to one another, the series examines the tension between women’s visibility within society and the mechanisms that simultaneously regulate their appearance and freedom of self-representation.

Compulsory hijab appears here not as an isolated motif, but as the visible sign of a broader system of control over bodies and behavior. Between exposure and concealment, vulnerability and resistance, the body becomes a political territory in which identity, autonomy, and freedom are continually negotiated.
